In order to overcome these homework triggers, it’s important to do the following:

a) Create an environment that’s conducive to completing homework. Wait until the dinner is cooked and the chores are done. Do what you must to make sure your other children are looked after and occupied. Aim to create an environment that’s calm, quiet and distraction-free.

b) If the way you explain something is not sitting with your child, try to incorporate visual aids and hands-on materials which can help to make abstract concepts more concrete. See if there are any YouTube videos or online activities that will help your child to see the concept from a different perspective.

c) Manage your own expectations in advance. Take a few seconds to remind yourself that every child is unique. Every child learns differently and in different stages. If your child genuinely cannot do something, that’s ok! They’re not meant to know everything. Identifying potential issues at an early stage is actually a very good thing as it will allow you to take the steps necessary to either get them support or support them yourself.

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens
By Sean Covey

Written by the son of author Stephen Covey who wrote The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, this book takes those principles and rewrites them for teenagers. It uses real-life stories from teenagers around the world who overcame obstacles to succeed as well as step-by-step guides to shifting paradigms, creating action plans and more. This book can be used by teenagers in many areas of their life, not just school.

The Power of Habit
By Charles Duhigg

In this book, Charles Duhigg examines why habits exist and what we can do to change them. Although this book was not specifically written for young adults, it can be used by teenagers to learn how to become more productive, achieve more success in their lives and make the most of the positive habits they already have.

Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff and it’s all Small Stuff
By Richard Carlson

This book is all about living our lives in a less stressful way. It teaches us how to let go of little problems so they don’t grow into bigger issues. In this book, Richard Carlson examines the strategies we can use to have a more fulfilled life and it would be particularly useful for young adults who experience increased stress or anxiety as exam season approaches.

Work Simply
By Carson Tate

Carson Tate wrote this book to help people understand and embrace their productivity style. As a productivity expert, she teaches readers how to understand their productivity style as well as the style of those around them. As exam season approaches, this book would be particularly useful in helping teenagers to become more productive in a way that is unique and meaningful to them.

Let’s talk about dyslexia…

Dyslexia is a learning difficulty which makes it hard for some learners to read, write and spell. They may also have difficulties with memory, processing numbers and time management (or other organisational skills).

Most people with dyslexia are intelligent, and many have above-average intelligence. They can also be extremely creative, imaginative and good at problem solving – just look at the multi-billionaire Richard Branson! Unfortunately, for a very long time, intelligence has been measured by how well someone can read, write, spell and compute. Thankfully, perceptions are changing and people with dyslexia are being valued for the skills and abilities that they do have.

Lots of parents are naturally quite worried when it’s first suggested to them that their child may have dyslexia. This is a common reaction but we would urge all parents and caregivers to take whatever steps are necessary to ensure that their child can avail of any additional support that is available to them.

People with dyslexia most certainly can succeed in education, whether that’s at primary, secondary or third-level. But early intervention is key to ensuring this success. This is because people with dyslexia DO need additional, specialised support in helping them to learn to read, write and spell. We work with lots of children with dyslexia, and many of our teachers have undergone specialised training in this area, so we know first-hand that children with dyslexia thrive off direct and explicit instruction. In fact, it can often be counter-productive to force a student with dyslexia to complete the same home/school work as their non-dyslexic peers (there are exceptions, of course).

If a child has not been diagnosed with dyslexia, they may not be in a position to receive specialised support at school. A diagnosis will not pigeonhole anyone. Instead, it will allow them to avail of this additional support. It’s also worth considering that a diagnosis of dyslexia, properly explained, can help to boost a child’s confidence as they now understand that their difficulties with reading, writing and spelling is not a reflection of their intelligence.

BIENVENUE!

Welcome to the latest blog post on our French Classes for Kids programme.

In this exciting programme, that has been running for the past 2 years, students are taught by a highly qualified French teacher. Please read our past blog posts to find out more about the class, the benefits of your child learning French at such a young age and the feedback given by parents regarding their son/daughter’s experience.

Exploring the theme of Halloween, French for Kids, 2018.

In every lesson, students will use a scrapbook that will be provided to them upon enrollment. Each week, students will add to their scrapbook and build upon their learning. Differentiated learning will also take place to ensure that all age levels are catered for equally within class.

Each lesson is action-based where students will engage in activities and role plays to reinforce the language they have been taught in class. Vocabulary is an essential element of language learning but so is pronunciation. Each lesson therefore links these two elements of learning.

Students will also learn about French culture and compare it to our culture here in Ireland throughout the 12 weeks.

Language learning has fantastic cognitive benefits as it shapes the way we think. We’re more creative as language learners and our critical thinking skills improve, key skills needed in the modern working world. Students also find it so much easier to learn additional languages once they have had exposure at a young age.

Enrol today at the following link before places fill up: https://www.premiertuition.ie/french

NOTE: If you have already signed up for the classes, you will find an overview of the upcoming 2019 programme on the parents’ portal. If you did not receive an email with the login details, please contact us and we’ll be happy to forward them on.

Parents often tell us that they struggle to get their children to read at home. When they ask us for advice we tell them two things:

1. Make sure the reading material is pitched at their level – too easy is boring and too difficult will frustrate them.

2. Make it fun!

I saw this activity on @primarylearners Instagram page and thought it was a really cool game that you could adapt to suit any learning objective – it could be used to teach a variety of different words/sight vocabulary, grammar rules or even multiplication/division tables. The possibilities are endless!

Children love dice games so this activity is really fun for them. They also love the thrill of potentially landing on a square that asks them to do something silly which keeps them engaged.

A blank template for this activity is here so if you use it, be sure to let us know how you get on!
