Irish

2nd Year

Getting a firm foundation in 2nd year Irish is crucial to doing well in the Junior Cycle exam. This is because Irish is a cumulative subject whereby topics and concepts build upon those that were previously taught. If your child has fallen behind or is finding it difficult to keep up, now is the time to get them support before they fall further behind.

Delivered by expert tutors, our personalised 2nd year Irish grinds contain a MAXIMUM OF 5 STUDENTS PER GROUP which allows them to receive individualised attention, feedback & support.

What Our Students Get:

Course Content

Throughout the course of the academic year, students enrolled in our 2nd Year Irish (HL) grinds will cover the following areas of the syllabus:

1. Literature: This includes poetry, short stories, a novel and drama. A minimum of 4 pieces of literature need to be studied for Junior Cycle. Students may only cover 2-3 in 2nd year and will do the remainder in 3rd year.

2: Written Composition: Covering a range of themes (Holidays, Sport, Technology etc). Vocabulary and sentence building will be of particular focus as this is where students often fall down. Approximately 18% of the Junior Cycle exam is a written piece. Careful practice and preparation in this area is needed in order to secure a good grade at Junior Cycle.

3: Grammar: Revision of verbs, tenses, prepositions, urú/séimhiú etc. Grammar drills and sentence structures, with explanations, will be essential in order to improve language proficiency as this is the mechanics of the language and how we construct sentences. This is good practice in 2nd Year moving forward into 3rd Year.

4: Reading and Listening Comprehensions: The reading comprehension makes up approximately 24% of the Junior Cycle exam and the listening makes up approximately 16%. Students in 2nd Year will more than likely see a Higher Level Reading Comprehension in their summer exam. It is therefore highly important that students practice, learn new vocabulary and revise key question words in order to attain a good mark here.

Our classes focus on the above areas to ensure students feel more comfortable and confident with the layout of the Junior Cycle Irish exam. By giving them the capability and confidence to answer common and more abstract questions in 2nd year, they will develop a more solid foundation going into 3rd year.

Please note that the course content is subject to change, depending on the needs of the students in the class.
